"...these narrators are artless.  They don't quite know what they are saying and are telling a story to the meaning of which they are not entirely privy."
ALAN BENNETT

As the lives of three women are prised open, their joys and foibles as human beings are unwittingly revealed in this satirical bittersweet  comedy.

A Bed Among the Lentils
Susan is a vicars wife.  Searching for her own place in the world through a taste for sherry and the perfect teeth of a local corner shopkeeper.

A Cream Cracker Under the Settee
Doris is fastidiously clean, and defiant about going into a home.  Her bloody-minded obsession with tidiness and order lead to her downfall.

Soldiering On
Community stalwart Muriel organizes people and events, including her own husbands' funeral, with military precision.  A woman of action, blind to the malice of others.

It's hardly a revelation to say that Alan Bennett has proven himself a master of the modern dramatic monologue... One of the finest dramatic achievements of the past few decades."
