I regret that my romance has come to an end.
All romances end at marriage...
Thomas Hardy’s much-loved classic is brought dramatically to life in this thrilling new production which fuses vivid story-telling, live folk-song and humour in a dynamic ensemble staging.
Having inherited her father’s farm, a spirited and feisty young woman - Bathsheba Everdene, finds herself playing mistress in a man’s world. She is pursued by three would-be lovers: the constant shepherd, Gabriel Oak; the obsessive landowner, William Boldwood and the reckless Sergeant Troy. But are any of them a match for the wilful Bathsheba?
Based upon one of Hardy’s most popular and enduring novels, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD takes us on a theatrical journey through Hardy country, following a passionate young girl propelled into womanhood by her experiences of love and loss.
Hardy's novel has been adapted by Mark Healy, who previously adapted Jane Austen's Persuasion for the Northcott Theatre Company (1998). As an actor, Mark appeared for the Northcott Theatre Company as Benedick in the open-air production of Much Ado About Nothing (1998), and also in Rougemont Gardens as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew (1999) and in the title role in Hamlet (2001). On the Exeter Northcott stage he appeared in The Importance of Being Earnest (1999) and as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood and The Babes in the Wood (2003).
Under the directorship of Rachel Tackley, ETT presents potent, vivid and vital productions of new and classic plays. A powerhouse of touring theatre, ETT works with a rich and varied mix of the country’s leading directors, actors and artists to stage thrilling and ambitious theatre that is vigorous, popular and, above all, entertaining. Recently, ETT’s production of Uncle Vanya directed by Peter Hall with Nicholas le Prevost, Neil Pearson and Ronald Pickup played to packed houses in the Spring. This production reunites the creative team behind the acclaimed The French Lieutenant’s Woman in 2006.
